Frequently Asked Questions
Essential Oils
Absolutely not!
There can be huge variances in the degree of quality regarding Essential Oils currently on the market because so many of these oils are “adulterated.” Adulteration refers to added synthetic extenders which are often petroleum distillates in order to “dilute” and extend these oils as a cost-cutting measure by many companies.
In addition, most of the plant industry used in essential oil production is grown for the food and fragrance industry. They simply are not cultivated for medicinal or therapeutic efficacy. The majority of oil/ plant cultivation is a mass production industry (often with sprayed pesticides and herbicides) which contributes to the very pollutants that so many of us recognize as toxic for ourselves and our beautiful planet.
“True” or as we say at NovaBotanica, truly impeccable Essential Oils are expensive and there is no way around it. You get what you pay for!
There are hundreds of companies now touting the benefits of essential oils. Most of them mean well, while others interested solely in profits. But the truth is that most of them are unskilled in determining what constitutes a “true” oil, how to use them and how to obtain them.
The fact is that so many of the oils on the market are not 100% pure, despite what labeling may say.
SO WHAT DOES PURE REALLY MEAN?
Many oils are mixed with similar species in order to provide for a larger volume output. However, this no longer is a truly “pure” essential oil. For example, with a “true” Lavender such as Maillete, the available production is smaller or limited in comparison to other Lavenders. In order to increase volume and sales, some growers, vendors or companies will add in a different strain, perhaps adding Spike Lavender or Lavendins that can yield three times the amount of regular lavender. But the problem is that these oils which all share the name Lavender contain much higher camphor levels and will have a very different therapeutic effect.
Every year production of true oils will differ based on climate, environmental and terrain changes as our world undergoes so much drastic imbalance. A true essential oil has its origin with experienced artisan farmers committed to using pristine farming practices. At the time of harvest, this valuable plant material immediately goes through a distillation process. It is a swift and critically timed process that involves great skill and care to ensure that everything remains intact and alive, free of contamination or untimely breakdown of vital plant material.
All of this affects availability and cost. When availability is low, many companies will adulterate or simply purchase adulterated oils in order to keep up their own inventory and to meet customer demand.
Nature cannot be commandeered by mass production. It is difficult to have large volume production for just one species, free of pesticides and herbicides. It takes great integrity, commitment, and cost to provide for an immaculate “true” oil.
Following your nose is never a reliable indication of purity. The tragedy is that we live in a synthetic, chemically adulterated world with many environmental pollutants. As a result, the majority of people simply do not have an educated “sniffer,” and in our current world of synthetics most would never know how to recognize this level of purity. Even worse, some companies will chemically adulterate by adding a few specific synthetic molecules (without any therapeutic benefit) in order to create a particular scent (i.e. rose or geranium, etc.) which fools the majority of customers into thinking they are buying the real thing.
Unless gas chromatography is routinely performed to chemically verify purity, or your vendor is a long-standing trusted one with tried and true resources, you likely would never know that the Essential Oil you are purchasing is not 100% pure. If you are buying from a company that has high volume sales then you should be suspect of purity. We at NovaBotanica have performed extensive research in order to use ingredients that we believe to be the purest of oils. Our Essential Oil vendors have traveled the world for decades and intimately know the producers and distillers of our oils and their careful production of each and every oil that we use.
Once you have tried a truly pure essential oil formulation, there is no going back!
Our bodies, physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually are incredibly responsive to what real purity means. The benefit of using a truly pure product is an exceptional level of therapeutic effectiveness along with a dynamically clean scent that is unrivaled.
PURITY: Factors such as adulteration and the purity of the oil (i.e. conventional, unsprayed, wildcrafted or organic sources) all influence costs to a company and ultimately the consumer.
AVAILABILITY: Other factors such as environmental conditions greatly influence product availability. Drought, flooding, fire and soil changes can markedly affect production of essential oils. Within any given year, a seasonal harvest for every single essential oil can vary dramatically. There simply is no norm now with climate change. Political conditions as well can affect availability. Our world is changing and it can be very difficult to get a quality oil that was readily available the year before.
SOME ADDITIONAL KEY FACTS:
Adulterated essential oils are much less expensive because they are simply “cut” or chemically extended for greater profit. We at NovaBotanica invest a lot of time and research to purchase only 100% pure and true Essential Oils for our formulations.
Conventional oils are flowers or plants that are grown and sprayed with pesticides. These are much less expensive than a true organic Essential Oil. We will never use conventional/pesticide oils. If an oil cannot be obtained due to climate changes or limited availability, we simply suspend production on a particular formula until we can find a “clean” oil that meets our exacting standards.
Wildcrafted means just that… they are harvested in the wild and are considered unsprayed. Wildcrafted can be a completely pure oil and can be used when an organic oil is simply unavailable. It is completely acceptable to use a wildcrafted Essential Oil; however, organic Essential Oils are our ideal preference and priority.
Organic Essential Oils are the most expensive of them all. When an Essential Oil is organic, there are significant costs involved due to the careful production from seed to flower as well as the expense of an organic certification process for the grower. Because everything that is put on the skin is absorbed systemically, we are passionate about providing the ultimate in purity for our customers. Our goal is to set a genuine standard for purity.
Here is an example of how the cost of one oil can affect overall product pricing.
An organic Bulgarian rose oil, Rosa Damascena, can cost anywhere between $950-$1250 per ounce and that cost is steadily rising. This cost would translate approximately into $42.00 per 16-20 drops. To create a mere 16-20 drops of this rose oil takes 50,000 petals, or 1500 whole roses. It takes 11,000 pounds of rose petals to make 2.2 pounds of this incredibly glorious oil. The roses themselves are picked during a very short season of just ten days during the coolest part of the morning with specially crafted willow baskets to prevent dew and water from wilting the petals. The harvesting of these exquisite petals starts at 4 am and ends at 10 am in order to minimize the damaging heat of the day and capture the highest amounts of volatile compounds.
If you are purchasing an inexpensive product with rose oil as one of its ingredients, you are likely not getting the real thing. Many companies purchase a rose scent made with just a handful of synthetic molecules to mimic this rose scent. But a true rose oil will have hundreds of vital yet tiny molecules, each with a specific function or healing benefit. When all of these natural molecules are extracted via a careful distillation process into a “whole” true oil, not only is the scent sublime but the therapeutic effects are simply unparalleled.
Our commitment is to use only the highest grade, unadulterated, handcrafted organic Essential Oils available, and the results are reflected in the effectiveness of every single one of our products.
Sir Lawrence Alma Tadema
Inherent in all Essential Oils are plant-based biologically active compounds that have beneficial therapeutic effects on every level, including physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual applications. Based on chemical composition, Essential Oils can have many widespread functions and abilities, such as supporting detoxification, cellular regeneration, and immune stimulation to name a few. Specific detoxifying Essential Oils can assist in the amelioration of skin redness, congestive blockages, and inflammation. Other Essential Oils can help regenerate thinning skin, aging, wrinkling, and crepiness. And oils with immune-stimulating properties can specifically target bacterial infections, viruses, flus, and colds.
Each Essential Oil in every NovaBotanica product is carefully selected based on its historical, traditional, and chemically known therapeutic benefits. It takes education, skill, and training to work with the myriad properties of a true Essential Oil. Through conscious alchemy, we combine our oils into synergistic formulations to create a product line that is not only magical but also astonishingly effective.
ESSENTIAL OILS: Essential oils are actual plant distillations created from a unique gentle heat, steam, and water process, which captures hundreds of molecular therapeutic compounds within every botanical distillation. This distillation process elevates the resonance and healing vibration of the original plant material until it becomes an ultrafine rarified oil with exceptional, multidimensional and valuable therapeutic qualities. Essential Oils are significantly more concentrated in their healing properties compared to oil extracts. A truly fine oil is expensive to cultivate, procure, distill, and bottle if each step is done correctly with great care and integrity. There are many factors to creating a flawless Essential Oil such as climate, terrain, skill, temperature mastery, and decades of craftsmanship and expertise. The scent, therapeutic benefits, and results of a pristine Essential Oil are simply incomparable to oil extracts.
OIL EXTRACTS: Extracts involve steeping raw plant material in a base oil, which is then known as a macerate. Oil macerates typically steep for approximately 40 days in either organic or nonorganic oils. After this period of time, the oils are decanted and the macerate is then thrown away. This process extracts certain properties or qualities of the original plant material. However, what is important to know is that extracts are limited in their amount of healing properties. This is because plant materials have properties that can be both oil and water extracted. Oil extraction addresses only one part of therapeutic benefits. Also extraction is simple, easy, and inexpensive, especially if a nonorganic base or seed oil is used, ultimately with much less cost to the manufacturer and the consumer. Another drawback to oil extracts is that most base oils often turn rancid quickly which means a customer will not have a truly clean product. While extracts clearly have some healing benefits, it is not as complete nor as therapeutic as a pure Essential Oil.
